Today’s word is: offence. The meaning of offence is: an illegal act or crime punishable by law, the action of attacking someone or something, a behaviour that hurts the feelings of others, the feeling of being angry or insulted

An offence is a behaviour which causes people to be upset or embarrassed. It may also mean breaking the law.

For example, employing a child as a labour has been declared an offence by the government.

Example number 1 of 8:  The principal and a police officer jointly visited a stall near a school. They warned the stall owner that selling cigarettes near a school is an offence. The owner promised to follow the law and immediately removed all cigarette packets.

Example number 2 of 8:  The retired government officer was asked to take a seat in a back row. He took it as an offence and decided to leave the function.

Example number 3 of 8: Mr. Deshmukh was advised certain precautions about business conversations. He was informed that religious or political theme based conversations can be offensive and should be avoided diligently.

Example number 4 of 8: Recently, a new form of offence was exposed regarding credit cards. The fraudster would book train tickets using other people’s credit cards without their knowledge and get the refund money to himself by cancelling the tickets.

Example number 5 of 8:  The traffic police involved the school children to promote road safety measures. The children displayed boards reminding the motorists that drinking and driving is a serious offence.

Example number 6 of 8:  A guest at the wedding asked for a glass of warm water. It took some time for arranging the same. He took the delay as an offence and refused to talk to anyone subsequently.

Example number 7 of 8:  A new website for pets promoted the sale of certain rare and protected species online. Animal lovers protested and lodged a complaint with the police. The Owner of the website was arrested for this offence and was charged a heavy fine.

Example number 8 of 8: If the issued cheque bounces due to lack of funds, it is an offence punishable by law. The judge may send the offender to prison or may charge him a fine.
