The word discretion means the choice made or judgement formed by an individual. It  indicates the right or ability possessed by a person to take responsible decisions.

Example number 1 of 8: The CEO of a construction company prepared a blue print for the proposed expansion of business to Middle East countries. The board of directors perused the plan and it was approved unanimously. The execution of the plan was left to the discretion of the CEO.

 

Example number 2 of 8: The medical reports indicate the seriousness of the patient’s condition. However, the doctor uses his discretion whether a surgery is needed or the illness can be cured by medicines alone.

 

Example number 3 of 8: The advocate for the accused often file an application for bail in the court. However, the outcome is uncertain because the bail is granted at the discretion of the judge.

 

 Example number 4 of 8: The discussion regarding ‘increasing stress levels at work place’ resulted in heated arguments on an online group for professionals. Some users even tried to hold others responsible. Therefore, the admin of the group intervened and asked all to use their discretion while posting messages.

 

Example number 5 of 8: The tourists on a boat ride at a popular tourist spot would offer junk food to the sea birds. This affected the health of the birds adversely. Hence, the tour operators requested the tourists to use their discretion and refrain from this activity.

 

Example number 6 of 8: The state level committee of a political party shortlisted the names of a few contestants for the upcoming elections. These were submitted to the party headquarters since the final selection would be at the discretion of the national committee.

 

Example number 7 of 8: The Indian team won the toss for the first match of the world cup. The captain had assessed the pitch conditions carefully before the toss. Hence, based on his discretion, he elected to bat first.

 

Example number 8 of 8: There were reports in the media about plethora of internet users suffering at the hands of cyber criminals who had stolen their personal data. Therefore, all prominent web sites advised their users to use their discretion while sharing their personal details on the internet.
